Salesforce Sandbox Seeding

Your Test Environment Needs Real Data to Find Real Problems.

An empty sandbox only tests the easy cases. Sesame Software populates your data-only sandbox from production — so the edge cases that only exist in real data don't surface for the first time in a live release.

Test Against Data That Reflects Reality.

Production Salesforce environments contain years of complex, high-volume data — deeply nested hierarchies, custom objects, edge cases that only accumulate over time. Sesame Software loads all of it into your sandbox in the correct sequence so your team isn't testing against a simplified version of your business.

  • Full production dataset loaded in correct parent/child hierarchical sequence
  • Recursive relationship handling built in — no manual intervention
  • Production environment never touched — seeding uses your backup copy
  • Clean chain of custody — auditable path from production to sandbox
  • Same platform that handles your backup and recovery

Data Governance and Chain of Custody

Your Data Follows a
Controlled, Auditable Path.

Sesame Software seeds your sandbox from your existing backup database — not directly from production. The data moves through a controlled, auditable path using infrastructure already governed and secured in your environment. No new exposure paths are created, and your live environment is never touched during the seeding process.

  • Production data is never accessed directly during sandbox seeding
  • The backup database acts as the controlled intermediary — already governed and secured
  • Full audit log of what data moved, when, and to which environment
  • Your storage infrastructure — data never passes through Sesame servers
  • SOC 2 Type II certified data handling throughout the pipeline

Why Sandbox Data Quality Matters

What Goes Wrong When Your Sandbox Doesn't Reflect Production

An empty or thinly populated sandbox isn't just an inconvenience — it's a source of risk. The edge cases that cause production failures are almost always the ones that only exist in real data.

QA Misses Production Edge Cases

Complex hierarchies, high-volume record sets, and unusual field combinations only exist in production data. Testing against a sparse sandbox means these cases go untested — until a release breaks in production.

Release Validation Is Incomplete

Workflows, validation rules, triggers, and automation behave differently at scale. A release that passes testing against thin data can still fail when it encounters the full complexity of your production environment.

Regulatory Testing Doesn't Hold Up to Scrutiny

Compliance validation must reflect actual data structures, volumes, and relationships to be defensible. Testing against a sandbox that doesn't mirror production produces results that won't withstand audit — and creates exposure you may not discover until it's too late.

Development Cycles Slow Down

When developers and QA teams can't trust their test environment, they add manual checks, run extra validation cycles, and hesitate to move quickly. Realistic sandbox data removes that friction.

What Is Sandbox Seeding

A Data-Only Sandbox Starts Empty. Sesame Software Fills It.

When Salesforce provisions a data-only sandbox, it contains only metadata and User accounts. No records, no history, no relationships. Your development and QA teams need production-quality data to test against — and manually recreating that data is not viable at enterprise scale.

Sesame Software loads your full production dataset into the sandbox in the correct parent/child hierarchical sequence, handles recursive relationships automatically, and prevents API exceptions through a structured SQL preparation step.

Salesforce Sandbox Types

Developer Metadata only
200MB. Individual development. Refreshes daily.
Developer Pro Metadata only
1GB. Small team testing. Refreshes daily.
Partial Copy Subset only
5GB. Template-based subset of production. Refreshes every 5 days.
Data-Only Sesame Seeds This
Metadata and Users at provision. Sesame Software loads your full production dataset in the correct hierarchical sequence.
Full Copy
Complete production copy. Expensive and refreshes every 29 days only. Many enterprise teams pair a Full Copy with a Data-Only sandbox seeded by Sesame Software for more frequent, controlled testing cycles.

Step-by-Step Procedure

How to Populate a Data-Only Sandbox with Sesame Software

The complete procedure for seeding a Salesforce data-only sandbox from your production environment. For most teams, the full process takes a few hours depending on data volume. The most common points of failure are load ordering and recursive relationships — both are handled by the procedure below.

Step 01
Build the Database
Create a copy of your production database. The recommended approach is a database export/import. Alternatively, run one of the following commands against your production org:
# Standard global pull -getGlobal # For large orgs: parallel execution for faster ingestion -getParallelGlobal
Step 02
Point the Datasource at Your Sandbox
Configure your Sesame Software datasource to point at your Salesforce Sandbox — not production — and the database you just created. This ensures the load targets the correct environment.
Step 03
Build Supporting Indexes
Generate the supporting indexes required for the upload process:
-getIndexGlobal
Step 04
Prepare the Database for Upload via SQL
Prep your uploadable tables in SQL to prevent API exceptions. Apply the following across all tables:
-- Mark all records for insert and clear the timestamp UPDATE all_tables SET delete_flag = 'I', systemmodstamp = null -- OpportunityLineItem: handle price logic to avoid exceptions UPDATE TOpportunityLineItem SET totalprice = null WHERE delete_flag = 'I' AND unitprice <> 0 UPDATE TOpportunityLineItem SET unitprice = null WHERE delete_flag = 'I' AND unitprice = 0 -- TPartner: clear AccountFromId where OpportunityId is set UPDATE TPartner SET AccountFromId = null WHERE delete_flag = 'I' AND OpportunityId IS NOT NULL
Objects missing systemmodstamp cannot be created — set to null, not omitted
Apply additional object-specific conditions for any objects in your org with validation rules or required field dependencies
Step 05
Verify Hierarchical Load Order
Check your load configuration file to confirm objects will load in the correct parent/child sequence. Run the check command and re-sort until the warning report is clean:
# Generates a warning report — re-sort objects in the load configuration until no warnings -checkGlobal
Step 06
Load the Data into the Sandbox
Initiate the data load. If your data contains recursive relationships, run until all relationships resolve and there are no remaining errors:
# Standard load -setGlobal # For large orgs: parallel execution -setParallelGlobal # Re-run for recursive relationships until error-free
Step 07
Handle Errors
When error flagging is enabled in your configuration, records with errors are flagged as Insert Error so they are easy to find. Before re-running, reset them:
-- Reset error-flagged records back to Insert status UPDATE all_tables SET delete_flag = 'I' WHERE delete_flag = 'IE'
Leave error-flagging off until the load is completely finished, then investigate remaining errors
Address root cause errors — validation rules, missing required fields — before re-running

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Salesforce sandbox seeding?

Salesforce sandbox seeding is the process of populating a data-only Salesforce sandbox — which initially contains only metadata and User accounts — with data from your production environment. Sesame Software automates this process so QA and development teams can test against realistic production-quality data.

Why does sandbox data quality matter for testing?

Testing against empty or synthetic data misses the edge cases that only exist in real production data — complex hierarchies, unusual field combinations, high-volume record sets. Sesame Software seeds your sandbox from your actual production backup, ensuring test results accurately reflect what will happen in your live environment.

How does Sesame Software handle the data chain of custody?

Sesame Software uses your existing backup database as the seed source. The data follows a controlled, auditable path from production to backup to sandbox — with no new data exposure paths created. Your production environment is never touched during the seeding process.

How does Sesame Software handle hierarchical load order?

Sesame Software manages the parent/child load sequence through its configuration file. Run the global check command to generate a warning report identifying ordering issues. Re-sort objects in the configuration until the report is clean, then proceed with the load.

How frequently can a sandbox be re-seeded?

As frequently as you need. Because Sesame Software's backup runs every 5 minutes, your seed source is always current. You can re-run the seeding procedure at any time — after a major data change, before a compliance test cycle, or on a regular schedule tied to your release cadence. The procedure is repeatable without any changes to your configuration.

What happens if the sandbox load encounters errors?

When error flagging is enabled in your configuration, records with errors are flagged as Insert Error so they are easy to find. Reset those records back to Insert status before re-running. It is recommended to leave error-flagging off until the full load is complete, then investigate remaining errors.
